Alton War Memorial

The memorial can be found in the corner of the churchyard extension on High Street. It commemorates 34 local men who died during to two world wars, 27 from the first and 7 from the second. The names of the fallen are inscribed on a wall to the side of the cross.



The inscription on the cross reads.


GIVE THANKS TO GOD

AND KEEP EVER IN MIND THE LOYAL SELF SACRIFICE
OF THE MEN OF ALTON WHO OFFERED THEIR LIVES
IN DEFENCE OF RIGHT IN THE GREAT WAR
1914 - 1918


1939 - 1945

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
MEN OF ALTON BRADLEY AND FARLEY WHO DIED IN THE TWO WORLD WARS
[Names]
THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD
AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN
AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
