Manchester Airport Memorial Garden

There are a number of individual memorials in the small Memorial Garden located near Terminal 1.


This Stone Commemorates
the Formation of
THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT
in 1940
At the command of Winston Churchill
No.1 PARACHUTE TRAINING SCHOOL
was founded at Ringway
leading to the establishment
of the Regiment in 1942
This Memorial is Dedicated
to the Officers and Men of
THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT
past and present and those of the
ALLIED AIRBORNE FORCES
who were trained at Ringway by the
ROYAL AIR FORCE



This stone commemorates the service, dedication and duty
shown by Officers and NCOs, men and women,
of the following organisations during the period 1940 - 1945
WOMEN'S AUXILIARY AIR FORCE
Parachute Packers
AIR TRANSPORT AUXILIARY
Number 14 Ferry Pool
SPECIAL OPERATIONS EXECUTIVE
For training and operations duties
conducted from this airport



POLISH FORCES

RINGWAY 1941 - 46
THIS MEMORIAL IS DEDICATED TO THE 6000
POLISH OFFICERS AND SOLDIERS OF THE
1ST INDEPENDENT POLISH PARACHUTE BRIGADE
AND MEMBERS OF THE SPECIAL OPERATIONS EXECUTIVE
WHO UNDERTOOK PARACHUTE TRAINING
TOGETHER WITH NATIONALS OF
BELGIUM, FRANCE, HOLLAND AND NORWAY
AT RINGWAY - MANCHESTER DURING WORD WAR II

HERE AT MANCHESTER AIRPORT
THE FIRST TRIALS OF GLIDERS
FOR MILITARY PURPOSES WERE
CARRIED OUT IN 1940.
THIS LED TO THE FORMATION OF
THE GLIDER PILOT REGIMENT
ARMY AIR CORPS IN 1942.
THE MOTTO OF THE REGIMENT WAS
"NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE"
