New Mills Memorial Garden

The Garden of Remembrance is in the south east corner of High Lea Park on St.Mary's road in New Mills.

GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE
World War II began in September 1939 and
ended in August 1945, Seventy two million
people die. New Mills at the time had a
population of 6,000; some 1,371 people
served in the armed forces. Sadly 48 lost
their lives and many more were wounded
or disabled. Two civilians also died as the
result of an air raid. As the war ended
servicemen and women returned to their
families, homes and jobs to come to terms
with their experiences. No one's life soldier
or civilian, had been unaffected by the war.

People wanted to commemorate their fallen
friends and the sacrifices they had all made to
help their country restore the peace they now
cherished. A war memorial fund was set up in
1946 and the towns people turned in a large sum.
It was felt by all that in the spirit of the newly
won peace a garden of remembrance ehere
people could sit and enjoy nature would be a
fitting memorial. The garden was opened to
the public in July 1947

This plaque was raised to commemorate
the 60th anniversary of that opening.
